Wild Life Safari - Tanzania

There are so many National Parks in Tanzania that, for practical reasons, a distinction was made between the ‘Northern Circuit’ and the ‘Southern Circuit’. The Northern Circuit, which includes famous spots such as the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, is more frequently visited, but therefore also more touristic. Safaris in the Northern Circuit usually start from the city of Arusha, the ‘Geneva of Africa’, located on 1,500 m above sea level, dominated by tall Mount Meru (4,665 m). Arusha is the new capital city of the East African Community. It is also the seat of the International Tribunal which is dealing with the case of the Rwanda genocide, and it is the place where the late Mwalimu Nyerere made his famous ‘Arusha Declaration’. .

The National Parks around Arusha include:
- The Serengeti
- Ngorongoro Conservation Area
- Lake Manyara National Park
- Tarangire National Park

The area around Arusha is of volcanic origin and belongs to the Great Rift Valley that stretches from Zambia up to Syria. The area therefore is not only of interest for mountain trekking, but also for its various geological phenomena. Lake Natron is worth a trip. It is an alkaline lake (like most lakes in the region) and the only breeding ground for the world’s approx. 1.5 million Lesser Flamingoes.

- Mount Meru, 4,665 m, Africa’s fourth highest mountain, a dormant volcano that has erupted last approx. 100 years ago. It forms the heart of Arusha National Park. Among the famous and interesting mountains in the area we can mainly name three:

- Mount Kilimanjaro, 5,885 m, the world’s tallest free standing mountain and the world’s tallest volcano. It has been dormant for hundreds of years, and some claim that it is extinct. Its snow-tipped cap has become world famous, especially through the tales by Ernest Hemingway.

- Ol Doinyo Lengai is by far the smallest among these three mountains, but the only active volcano among them. In March, 2006, it has had its last major eruption, and poisonous gasses regularly emerging from its crater may well prevent the climber from reaching its top. ‘Engai’, in Maa, the language of the Maasai People, means ‘God’, whereas ‘Doinyo’ means ‘rock’. The mountain is holy to the Maasai therefore, although not, as often wrongly assumed, the ‘residence’ of God, as the Maasai, like most other East African tribes, believe in the one invisible God who is omnipresent.

Culturally, the area around Arusha is of utmost interest. Although the Maasai People are by far the most famous worldwide, there are many other tribes of different origin, culture and language. We will name only a few here:

- The Maasai claim their origin from the area around Mount Hermon which nowadays forms the border between Israel and Syria. In ancient times they migrated south into Egypt and followed the River Nile upward. Where the Blue Nile meets the White Nile, in Khartoum, they split, and whereas one part of the Maasai wandered into Ethiopia, the other arrived here…

- The Hadzabe belong to the Bushmen People, although their language is not closely related to that of the San in Namibia, for example. The Hadzabe are among the last Hunters and Gatherers worldwide and live around Lake Eyasi which is the most northern area to which Bushmen have ever migrated.

Cultural attractions in the Northern Circuit also include Olduvai Gorge, where the oldest human remains worldwide have been found. The site can be visited en route from or to the Serengeti. Also a visit to one of the many coffee plantations around Arusha can be an interesting cultural experience. There, you will be shown how coffee is grown, harvested, roasted, and in the end, you will get some to taste.
