The Ngorongoro, as the Serengeti, forms part of ancient Maasai land. In this the world’s largest caldera, which belongs to the Serengeti ecosystem, an enormous variety of species live, protected by the crater rim. The crater floor forms a vast steppe, interrupted by alkaline lakes in which flamingoes and hippos are found. It is one of the rare places where you may still encounter a rhino. You may get lucky and observe lions take their hunting positions or devouring their prey.
The disadvantage of Ngorongoro is that, especially during high season, the crater is becoming increasingly touristic, and you may have to share an observation spot with another twenty cars or so.
Yet, in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area you may still see Maasai herders with their cattle living in harmony with the wild animals. And the crater floor gives you the opportunity to see as many wild animals as possible within the shortest period of time.
So, if you visit Tanzania – Ngorongoro is a MUST!
